1. How do I add devices?
The application can contain up to 6 pages, each containing up to 16 buttons. Each button can control one or more Bye Bye Standby® devices. To add a button, make sure "Add device buttons" is set to "on" in "Settings", then touch "Add a new button" on the main screen. Enter a description for the button, then press "Add a device" for each one that is to be added and select the device Id as set on the Bye Bye Standby® devices. You will also need to select either "Manual", "On" or "Off" which is used to determine whether the device will be controlled in a specific way, or if you will be prompted to turn the device on or off when you press a button. Then click "Done". The button will appear on the main screen.
2. How do I turn devices on and off when at home?
Ensure that your iPhone or iPod touch is connected to the same wifi network as your Bye Bye Standby® Online Controller (version 2). Follow the instructions above to add device buttons. Then, ensure that the location button in the bottom left of the main screen is set to "Home" and touch the button for the device(s) you wish to control. This will show you a message and allow you to switch the device "on" or "off".
3. How do I turn devices on and off when away from home?
If you wish to control your devices when away from home, then this is possible if the Bye Bye Standby® Online Controller is connected to the Internet and the broadband connection has a static I.P. address. Simply enter your static I.P. address in to the remote address box on the "Settings" screen and configure your broadband router to forward port 53008 to your Online Controller. Most home broadband connections however have dynamic I.P. addresses, which means that using the application when away from home is more complicated to set up and is less reliable. To set this up, you will need to create an account with a third party service such as DynDNS.com. After creating a DynDNS account,
- log in and click "add host services".
- enter a "hostname" in to the textbox and pick a domain from the drop down list. These will allow you to identify your broadband connection even if the dynamic I.P. address changes. Whatever you pick for these two fields will be what you enter in to the "remote address" text box on the "Settings" screen of this application.
- click the link to "Use auto detected IP address..."
- then click the create host button.
- Now enter the address you picked in to the "remote address" text box on the "Settings" screen of this application (including the dot between what you typed and what you selected from the drop down list)
- You will now need to configure your broadband router so that it forwards port 53008 to your Online Controller
The application should now be able to control your devices when you're away from home. That is, until your dynamic I.P. address changes. To keep your DynDNS account up to date with your broadband's I.P. address, you will need to install a DynDNS update client on your home computer using the instructions on the DynDNS site. Whenever your computer is on, it will update DynDNS if necessary and you will continue to be able to control your devices remotely, so it is important to run the update client regularly so the address of your broadband is always up to date. If it is not, then you will be unable to control your devices remotely.
4. How do I edit device buttons?
Once a button has been added to the main screen, it can be edited by pressing the button until the edit screen appears.
5. Do I need to subscribe to the Bye Bye Standby® premium service to use the iPhone app?
The Bye Bye Standby® premium service allows you to create scheduled events which will automatically turn your devices on and off at set times. The Remote for Bye Bye Standby® iPhone app is completely standalone and does not require the premium service to send commands to your Online Controller. Due to restrictions on the iPhone and iPod touch, it is not possible to add functionality for schedules to the app.
6. How do I change the button icons?
To change the icon used by a button:
- press and hold the button until the edit screen appears
- touch the currently selected "Button icon"
- The icon picker can be scrolled to view all existing icons
- To add a new icon touch the "+" button which will allow you to choose any picture in your photo library. After selecting a picture, scale the image to fit in the selection area using the standard zoom finger gestures and touch "Choose".
- To delete a custom icon, select the icon and touch the delete button. Any buttons which use the deleted icon will be reset to the standard icon.
- Touch "Done" to choose the selected icon, then "Done" to save the button
Tip: Any image in your photo library can be made in to a button icon, including photos or images saved from the Internet. To save an image from the Internet (for example, after doing an Internet search for "free iPhone icons"):
- load the page containing the image in Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch
- touch and hold the image until you are given the option to "Save Image". The image will then appear in the Photos app and can be chosen using the instructions above
We are also creating a collection of free home automation icons which you can save.
7. Can I control a lamp dimmer socket using the app?
The Bye Bye Standby® lamp dimmer socket allows a lamp to be controlled and to set its brightness. Although dimming is not directly supported by the app, dimmer sockets can be controlled to set the required brightness. When the socket is turned on, turn the device on again to start cycling through the brightness levels. To set the required brightness turn the socket on once again.
8. What does "Prompt to control" on the add/edit button screen do?
When a device is added to a button, each device id has a corresponding action; manual, on or off. As long as all actions added to a button are either on or off (i.e. no manual actions), then you can choose whether you should be prompted when pressing a button. If "Prompt to control" is set to "ON", then you will be prompted when you press a button, otherwise you will not and the commands will be sent straight to the device(s).
9. What should I enter in the "Local address" field?
Usually, this field should be left blank as the app automatically knows how to connect to your Online Controller. However, if for some reason the app won't send commands then it's possible that your router is blocking them. In this instance, you should either configure your Online Controller to have a static IP address on your network (see the Bye Bye Standby forum for more information) or you should configure your router to always assign the same IP address to it. Once you know the IP address of your Online Controller then enter this in to the "Local address" field.
10. How do I add/change the caption at the bottom of the page?
To add or change the caption at the bottom of the page, touch the area to the left of the settings button. Enter the title for the page in to the text field which appears, then touch OK. If you do not want a caption, delete the text from the text field.
